International IDEA and ISDP co-organized a lecture on the topic "Where China meets India: Burma and the New Crossroads of Asia" in which Dr. Thant Myint-U discussed his new book. The lecture was held at International IDEA's headquarters in central Stockholm.

ASIA FORUM on "Patterns of DPRK’s Transition" with Lee Seung Yeol and John Rydqvist. Dr. Lee Seung Yeol is a senior researcher at Unification Institute of Ewha Womans University and currently visiting researcher at ISDP. Mr. John Rydqvist is program manager division of defence analysis at FOI.

Project News

ISDP is delighted to announce that it will initiate a new project on partner driven cooperation (PDC) in Vietnam, focusing on agricultural issues and land policy. ISDP would like to thank SIDA in Vietnam for their generosity, and is very much looking forward to initiating the cooperation with our new partners, IPSARD, Lund University and CBS. The results of this project will be availabe on ISDP's homepage.

ISDP has initiated a project in cooperation with International IDEA on supporting political processes in the Baltic States. The project aims to increase our understanding on the influence of organized crime networks over political processes in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and identify counter strategies that could serve to mitigate efforts against the infiltration of organized crime networks into politics. The project is a part of the global Protecting Politics Initiative launched by International IDEA in 2010.

ISDP has initiated a project for the Swedish National Institute for Public Health that aims to prevent youngsters from starting to use cannabis.

Walter Kegö gave a presentation at Riga Stradina University on the idea of creating a Baltic Joint Investigation Team under the theme "Role and Possibilities of Law Enforcement Authorities and Police in Ensuring Public Security".

Walter Kegö participated at a conference in Riga, Latvia on how to improve international police cooperation regarding transnational organized crime in the European Union.

ISDP and the Academy of Military Science co-organized an International Symposium on the "Situation in West Asia and North Africa and Its impact on the International Strategic Configuration".

Walter Kegö and Erik Leijonmarck gave a presentation at European Cities Against Drugs mayors meeting on the impact of the global narcotics industry on societies worldwide.

Johanna Popjanevski undertook a research trip to Tbilisi, Georgia She met with Georgian high level officials and members of the opposition in preparation for an upcoming seminar on Georgia in Stockholm, and conducted research and interviews for upcoming publications.

Niklas Swanström made a presentation on "The Role of the ROC in Maintaining Regional Security: Tango with the PRC" at the 2011 Defence Forum on Regional Security, organized by Ministry of National Defence, ROC.

Niklas Swanström made a presentation on North Korea and the possible impact of PLA at the Chinese Council of Advanced Policy Studies in Taipei, Taiwan.

Bert Edström presented his paper "Japan's foreign policy in a multipolarizing world: A study of the evolution of Japan's foreign-policy doctrine after 1993" on the 13th Conference of the European Association for Japanese Studies, Tallinn.

August 22, 2011

A meeting between ISDP and the Institute for Disarmament and Peace (IDP), Pyongyang, DPRK was held on matters related to security and peace on the Korean Peninsula, as well as events for the ongoing bilateral cooperation between IDP and ISDP.

August 16, 2011

A joint seminar between ISDP and a South Korean research team, headed by Prof. Kim Hyung Joon of Moungji University, was held, focusing on security matters related to the Korean Peninsula.

Guest researchers

Senior Colonel Wang Xinjun is a research fellow at the Department of War Theories and Strategic Studies, PLA, Beijing, China and a guest researcher at ISDP. The topic for Senior Colonel Wang's research is 'Comparing Studies on Modern Defence Systems in the West & China'. During his stay he will meet and interact with a wide array of Swedish and International researchers, policy makers and will also host an Asia Forum at ISDP. Senior Colonel Wang will stay until December 15, 2011.

Major Jiao Liang is a guest researcher at ISDP from the Department of World Military Studies, Academy of Military Science, PLA, Beijing, China. During his stay at the Institute Major Jiao will research on China's Military Modernization in the Context of Peaceful Rise. He will host an Asia Forum at ISDP and will also meet with Swedish and International researchers and policy makers. Major Jiao will stay until December 15, 2011.

Mr. Li Yan is an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of American Studies, CICIR, Beijing, China. He will be staying at ISDP as a guest researcher until November 15, 2011. Mr. Li’s research will focus on 'Sino-US Military-to-Military Relations In Times of Global Commons', before he leaves ISDP he will host an Asia Forum. Among his activities at ISDP he will have the opportunity to interact with Swedish and International policy makers.

Mr. Liu Yu is a guest researcher at ISDP and an Assistant Professor of Institute of World Politics Studies, CICIR, Beijing, China. Mr. Liu's will research on 'The Rising of Emerging Powers and Its Effect'. Mr. Liu will have the opportunity to visit Swedish and International researchers and policy makers during his stay at ISDP. He will also host an Asia Forum at the Institute before he leaves on November 15, 2011.

Staff Developments

Christopher O'Hara spent June – August in the USA with Stratfor Global Intelligence where he took part in different training courses and contributed to online content.

Stina Bergman started her internship at ISDP in September, 2011. She holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science and during her BA studies she spent one semester at the Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany. Currently she is studying the Master's Programme in Politics and International Studies at Uppsala University. Her main area of interest is mechanisms of regime change and stability in the East Asian region.

Elliot Brennan started his internship at ISDP in September, 2011. He holds a Masters in European and International Studies from Monash University, Australia. He has studied at Science Po (Institut d'Études Politiques) Paris and Université de Lyon III. During the past four years Elliot has worked as a business journalist across five continents specialising in political economy and energy in emerging economies. His work has allowed him to interview and meet with government officials, ministers, ambassadors and leading CEOs across Asia, the Gulf and Middle East, Europe and the Americas.

Zhou Hang started his internship at ISDP in September, 2011. He is currently a second-year Master student of Peace and Conflicts Studies in Uppsala University. He holds a double degree in Bachelor of International Politics from Sichuan University (Chengdu, P.R. China) and in Bachelor of Political Sciences from Université de Paris-X Nanterre La Défense. His main academic interests are ethnic conflicts and Chinese involvement in Africa. During his internship at ISDP, he will be mainly working with the ASIA Program.

David Nises started his internship at ISDP in September, 2011. He recently completed his BA degree in Security, Terrorism and Counterterrorism from Murdoch University (Perth, Australia) His main fields of interest include ethnic/religious conflicts and political aspects of terrorism and counterterrorism. At ISDP, David will be working mainly with questions related to Southeast Asia.

Erica Ohene-Bekoe started her internship at ISDP in August, 2011. She holds a Dual Degree Master of Arts in International Relations and International Law, and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Philosophy. She acquired her joint degree studies at C.W Post College of Long Island University (US) and a Study Abroad Program at the Regents British-American University of London (UK). As part of her International studies, she interned as a journalist for the United Nations Department of Public Information; and worked as an International Business Coordinator for an International Export/Import Company. Her academic focus lies on war crimes in South-East Asia and the Pacific.

Christina Wenngren started her internship at ISDP in August, 2011. She holds a MA in Political Science from Lund University, Sweden, with focus on International Relations and International Criminal Policy. As part of her studies she spent one semester in Ghent, Belgium, where she studied International Criminal Law, and one semester in Ghana writing her Master’s thesis. As part of her MA studies she had an internship at the International Organization for Migration (IOM). During her internship at ISDP she will work in the field of organized crime.

Natalie Verständig started her internship at ISDP in August, 2011. She recently graduated with her BA degree in International Relations and Middle Eastern Studies from the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) in Herzliya, Israel. Her fields of interest include politics and security in Israel and the Middle East. At ISDP Natalie will be working mainly with questions regarding the Middle East and the Silk Road Studies Program.
